Charles W. Snowdale
SEARSPORT- Charles Willis Snowdale, 101 years young of Searsport went to be with his beloved wife of 66 years Eleanor M Snowdale on December 4th, 2017.
He was born March 9, 1916 in Bryantville, MA the son of Walter and Esther Snowdale.
He is survived by his son Robert A. Snowdale, and Robert's wife Jayne of Mount Dora FL, and daughter Susan D Perry, and her husband George of Orono, four grandchildren Emma Lyon, husband Jeromy of Mount Dora FL, Rebecca Snowdale of Eugene OR, Ben Perry, wife Elise of Salisbury, MA and Dan Perry of Orono, ME.
At 18, after graduating from Stoughton High School in MA, he enlisted in the Marine Corp. He spent 3 years in China, with the 4th Marine Regiment, an elite group known as China Marines. He then attended King's Point, the Merchant Marine Academy, and received a degree in Marine Engineering. During WWII he served as a Merchant Marine.
His greatest love after his family was music. He sang in the church choir at the First Congregational Church of Stoughton and Searsport. He sang with the Old Stoughton Music Society and the Penobscot Bay singers in Belfast. He played in the bell choir at the Stoughton Church. He sang in several musical productions like Brigadoon. He played the organ, piano, clarinet, flute and in his late 70's he took up the bagpipes. Even at the age of 99 he still played the piano for church suppers.
He loved working out in the yard. It was his pride and joy.
He was a member of the Masons, Scottish Rite, and the Anah Shriners of Bangor.
He spent many hours at the Coastal Coffee shop winning cribbage games and enjoying the company of friends.
His secret to longevity: He was a life time member of Bayside Fitness Center. Up until the age of 99 he went 3 times a week. He was an avid reader and did the crossword puzzle everyday.
His family was blessed to have his wisdom and wit for 101 years. He will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the First Congregational Church of Searsport building fund.
A memorial Service will be held on Dec 20, 2017 at 11am at the First Congregational Church of Searsport. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services Searsport. (mitchelltweedie-young.com)
