Elizabeth Bryant Kelley Meigs, daughter of Adm. Carleton & Elizabeth Rattray Bryant of Searsport & Bangor, ME, born on Feb 7, 1923, died peacefully Sept 2019 in Belfast, ME following an interesting & active life. Kelley, as she was known, spent many years traveling the world with her parents, living in Panama, China, the Philippines, & the US, spending her last years at her favorite home on the shores of Swan Lake, Searsport, ME. Kelley had converted her summer cottage into a warm, cozy year round home, where family loved to gather, enjoying endless games of Scrabble, swimming & picnicking on the beach by the fire with S'mores!. Kelley referred to her location as "the foothills of the Brooks Range" which offered exquisite sunsets over the lake often being serenaded by the loons.
Kelley raised her 5 children in Orland, ME, with JF "Pinky" Meigs, teaching & encouraging them to enjoy the road of life. She was an active member of the Bangor Art Society, painting portraits & landscapes, totaling 625 individual paintings that now grace homes around the US. She was an ardent Maine Guide, guiding hiking, fishing, & canoeing trips through Maine's wild forests, rivers & mountains. Kelley also held a private pilot's license, flying friends & family around the countryside. She was an avid snow skier, belonging to the 80+ club at the Camden Snow Bowl, and attended the Searsport Congregational Church. At 84 she traveled to Newfoundland & Labrador with 3 of her children, where she sailed off the coast for 12 days sighting whales & icebergs, and visiting the local villages. In earlier years she dog-sledded through the Yukon & Baffin Islands, even building igloos to sleep in along the way. To say that she had a fulfilling life is an understatement!!
Kelley was predeceased by her daughter, Sharon Kelley Soper Walsh, in 1982. Surviving are her sons, James Bryant Kelley, of Litchfield, ME, Kevin Raymond Kelley, of Belfast, ME, and twin daughters, Carol Ann Kelley, of Nokomis, FL & East Orland, ME, and Sheila Kelley Glavine (& husband Jim), of Bar Harbor, ME, along with 13 Grandchildren, 9 Great Grandchildren, Step Children, a niece & a nephew.
A private family gathering will be held, per Kelley's request. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charitable cause of your choice.
