Obituary

Castine- Wendell Wadsworth Thombs, age 93, of Castine, Maine, and formerly from Irvington, New York, passed peacefully in his home on Saturday, October 26, attended by his son Michael. Born in Castine in 1925, he was the youngest and last surviving child of Harry and Eva Thombs. A child of the Depression, he developed a lifelong dedication to responsibility, hard work, and integrity. Still in his teens, he joined the SeaBees during WWII, serving in the Pacific. When he got out of the service, he worked as a union carpenter, which led up to being a part of the construction team that built the concrete piling forms for the original Tappan Zee Bridge on the banks of the East Side. He was a foreman and manager of Hastings Roofing for 40 plus years. When he retired, he had a farm in Jefferson, NY, prior to moving back to Castine, ME. Predeceased by his wife Agnes, to whom he was wed for 56 years, he also outlived both parents, six siblings, as well as daughter Patricia and son Robert. He is survived by sons Richard and Michael, Richard’s wife, Carol (Grossman), and son-in-law Alfonso Naranjo. In addition, he leaves behind five granddaughters: Lisa, Nicole, Rebecca, Jennifer, and Ashley A devoted member of the Catholic Church and a beloved member of the Castine community, his presence will be greatly missed. Viewing hours will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on November 8 at the MitchellTweedie Funeral Home in Bucksport. On November 9, at 11:00 a.m., a service will be held at the funeral home, followed by a car procession to the Thombs plot in the Castine Cemetery. The burial service will take place at approximately 12:30 p.m., followed by a celebration of Mr. Thombs’ life held at Emerson Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations to an organization supporting the humane treatment of animals, veterans, or Alzheimer research is requested. We have missed Wendell's presence at Mass over the last years, and wanted to send our sympathy at his final passing.. He was a stalwart and faithful presence Our Lady of Holy Hope, which I understand was once your family property.
